The Gold Standard: Klein Collins Hurdler Sweeps 110m and 300m at State

The Gold Standard: Klein Collins Hurdler Sweeps 110m and 300m at State
Klein, Texas— Andrew Jones, a junior at Klein Collins High School, delivered a spectacular performance at the UIL Class 6A State Track & Field Championships, capturing two gold medals in both the 110-meter hurdles (13.41 seconds) and 300-meter hurdles (36.09 seconds).

Breakout Year for a Rising Star
Jones’ standout season began with modest expectations but quickly turned into something extraordinary. Early in the year, he wasn’t even focused on the 110 hurdles.

“I wasn’t even planning on running the 110 this year,” Jones said. “But I got a lot better at the start of the season and realized I could really do this.”

As the season progressed, Jones narrowed his focus and set a major goal: to win gold in both hurdle events. Standing on the track moments after claiming his second state title, he smiled under the weight of two gold medals.

“It feels really good,” Jones said. “That was the goal. I thought that would be really, really awesome—double gold. And I did it!”

State Champion in Two Events
In both finals, Jones took control from the start. He powered out of the blocks, cleared the early hurdles with confidence, and maintained his lead in both the 110 and 300-meter events.

“My start isn’t usually my strength,” Jones said. “But I told myself, if I’m first to the first hurdle, I can control the race. Once I cleared that first one in front, I just kept going.”

And Jones already has his eyes on next year.

“Double gold again,” he said. “Maybe a relay, maybe a team conference championship. We'll see.”

Coach’s Perspective
Klein Collins track coach John Patterson couldn’t hold back his pride, standing on the track with Jones.

“I’m so proud of Andrew,” Coach Patterson said. “He’s the hardest-working kid on our track program. He’s a leader. He brings other kids with him.”

Patterson also shared his vision for Jones’ future.

“Next step is to go 35 seconds in the 300s,” he said.

Gratitude and Future Focus
“Shoutout to Coach Patterson, Coach Polo, and my club coach, Coach Walker,” Jones said. “And of course, my mom. She’s been there for everything.”

Jones is still exploring his college options, focusing on programs that balance competitive athletics with strong academics.

“I want to see who has the best programs, the best support, and strong academics,” he said. “Wherever I go, I want it to feel right.”

With his senior year remaining and a pair of gold medals already earned, Andrew Jones is not only a two-time state champion—he’s a name to watch in Texas high school track and field.
